Welcome to The Friends of St John’s Garden!
We’re a community of local volunteers who look after a tiny half-acre woodland garden tucked away behind Farringdon Station in EC1.
St John’s Garden is a Green Flag Park and Site of Importance for Nature and Conservation.
As the friends group, we care for the garden alongside the dedicated team at Islington Parks Service, maintaining it as a peaceful oasis for visitors and supporting biodiversity through pollinator planting, habitat creation and biological monitoring.
Get Involved!
There are many ways to support the Garden. They can be as simple as following us on Instagram, signing up for our monthly newsletter, joining a volunteer session, or bringing work colleagues to volunteer in the Garden.
Below are some ideas to get you started, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Check out our latest events calendar
There’s always plenty going on, with activities including guided walks, sound baths, poetry in the park, edible forest workshops and community gardening. And if you’d rather just stop by and enjoy a quiet wander in the garden, that’s cool too.
Join The Community
Mail stjohnsgarden.ec1@gmail.com to receive monthly newsletters, follow us on Instagram, and tag us in your photos.
This is the best way to know what’s happening in the garden and also reach out with any questions or ideas. Come along to one of our events (see our latest activities calendar above) or get involved in one of our biodiversity initiatives.
Help Us Care for the Garden
There are a few ways to help us care for the garden, getting your hands dirty and meeting your neighbours!
Open Toolshed. From 9-10 am every Friday morning, we open the toolshed and encourage the community to come by and help with small tidying and care tasks in the garden.
Monthly Community Gardening. Roughly once a month on a Saturday morning from 10-12 pm. Come along for a cup of tea and get stuck into seasonal tasks with your neighbours!
If our scheduled gardening events don’t work for you, feel free to do your bit to care for the garden, even if you only have a few minutes. You could help with litter picking, dead hedges or replacing sticks.
Bring your team
Customised gardening sessions can also be arranged, exclusive to your team and at a time that works for your business, whether it’s an hour-long lunchtime blitz or a full morning/afternoon session.
All proceeds go towards caring for the garden, caring for wildlife and supporting community activities in the garden, a precious green oasis in one of the UK's most nature-deprived neighbourhoods.
